F.A.I.R. Testing

We have been busy this week administering the new F.A.I.R. (Florida Assessment for Instruction in Reading) assessment. Developed by the Florida Center for Reading Research in collaboration with Just Read, Florida!, this new assessment system will provide teachers screening, diagnostic, and progress monitoring information that is essential to guiding instruction. The students are administered the test individually and answers are recorded on the computer. The test involves word reading that places them in a particular reading passage. Comprehension and Vocabulary are also tested. Some students may then be given subsections of a Targeted Diagnostic Inventory. This inventory includes Letter Names and Sound Knowledge, Phonemic Awareness, and Word Building. The assessment also includes the ability to monitor progress in targeted areas on the computer which will be valuable information when planning interventions.

Destination Success

Click here to log on to Destination Success. Your child's username is first name last name 208 ( no spaces ) and their password is their 4 digit birth date ( Jan. 1st would be 0101 ). We have assigned lessons that correlate with our first reading theme, All Together Now. Scroll down past the summer reading assignments to access these lessons. If your child was not a student at Parkwood last year these will not be loaded for you. We hope to have these students added by the end of the week.

Partner Reading

On Friday we learned all about Partner Reading in First Grade. We learned what it looks like and sounds like. When partners read to one another they get immediate feedback on the pronunciation of words and the meaning of text. The students get to practice building fluency and comprehension, and discuss the books they are reading. Students work with their peers to build their skills as a reader and practice previously taught strategies.
