Dental Health Month

Last month was dental health month and we were happy to have Ms. Ellison come visit our classroom. Ms. Ellison told us how to take care of our teeth and gave us all a toothbrush, toothpaste and dental floss. Thanks Ms. Ellison!

A Closer Look at Non-fiction Text

In preparation for our next genre of writing, report writing, the students have been learning about the features of non-fiction texts. Using the anchor chart as a guide, the students browsed non-fiction books to locate some of these features and mark them with sticky notes. They then shared their finding with their classmates.

Valentine's Day

The students had a great time passing out and receiving their valentines. Thanks to those that sent in cookies also.....yummy!!

How People Grow and Change

As part of our Animals Unit in science we are studying how people grow and change. The students brought in photos of themselves as babies, toddlers, preschoolers and first graders. They placed the photos in order and we discussed similarities and differences among their pictures. I also asked the students if they resembled another family member. This is one of my favorite projects....I love looking at the adorable baby pictures! The students also get so excited to show off their photos and tell all about them.

Fill the Hexagons

This week we began our geometry unit in Math Workshop. The students enjoyed playing Fill the Hexagons. In this game the students learned that shapes can be decomposed in different ways and that different shapes can fill the same area.

Literacy Centers

In addition to reading independently each day during reader's workshop, the students work at literacy centers. Some of the centers they may go to are computers, browsing center, listening center, partner reading, vocabulary or word work.

100 Days Smarter!

Friday we celebrated the 100th day of school! We started the day learning a poem titled "100 is A Lot". Later, we drew pictures of what we will look like when we are 100 years old and wrote about who we thought we would spend our time with and what we would be doing at that age. We also made estimations on how many times we could clap, recite the alphabet and jump in 100 seconds. At the end of the day, we enjoyed a special 100th day snack.

What does an animal need?

For the past few days, the students have been working together in small groups to research the needs of animals. They had to answer questions about where their animal lives and what it eats. They also drew pictures of the animal. Yesterday, the groups presented their information to the class.
