2d Shapes

This week we began our geometry unit in math.  We started by learning about two dimensional shapes.  The students explored power polygons and learned to sort them by their attributes.  After observing the number of sides and corners each shape had, they practiced drawing triangles and polygons.

This week the students were introduced to Base 10 Blocks to help them add and subtract big numbers.  When first teaching students how to add these big numbers it helped to break down each number by making it with base 10 blocks.  Students then were again able to see just how many longs (tens) and units (ones) each number was composted of and were able to see what happened with you added or combined all of the base blocks together.

Reader's Theater

What is reader's theater? It's a way to involve students in reading aloud. In reader's theater, students "perform" by reading scripts created from grade-level books or stories. Usually they do so without costumes or props.
Reader's theater is a strategy that combines reading practice and performing. Its goal is to enhance students' reading skills and confidence by having them practice reading with a purpose. Reader's theater gives students a real reason to read aloud. These students are sharing the story The Three Billy Goats Gruff with their classmates after practicing during their center time.

Happy 100th Day!!

Measurement

In first grade, to meet the standard, the students must be able to order three objects by length.  The must also be able measure classroom objects using non-standard units.  The students measured glue sticks, books, boxes and lengths of tape using items such as cubes, paper clips, their feet, baby feet and and popsicle sticks!
