What Makes Ten?

Have a little fun practicing those combinations of ten!!

New Friends

We were very excited about our new classmates that joined us from Mr. Brennan's class this week.  The eight new students have done a wonderful job of learning the rules in room 5.  I was very proud of all the students this week.  They have done a wonderful job following our rituals and routines, especially during literacy centers.

Math Centers

This year, in addition to literacy centers, we have an extra 30 minutes in our schedule for math centers.  During this time, some students will work in a small group with the teacher  while other students reinforce prior skills through computer time (Reflex Math, Iready and Successmaker) and other games.

                                      Practicing those 'tricky teen' numbers

                                        Reflex math for fact practice

Watercolors in Art

I love picking the children up from art and seeing what they have created.  I thought these watercolors were beautiful!  We are so happy to have Mr. Petry back as our art teacher this year.  He told me the students were working with horizontal and vertical lines and how to show the reflections of the trees in the water.....such talent!!

Tens Go Fish!

In math we have been working on making combinations of 10.  The students played a game called Three Towers where they practiced 'counting on' with a number cube and dot cube.  They used the sums to construct three towers of ten with linking cubes.  They then had to write an equation that matched their towers.  Today, we played 'Tens Go Fish'.  This is similar to the regular card game Go Fish, except that instead of collecting 'pairs' , the students had to collect combinations of 10.  When the game was over they listed their combinations of cards in the form of an equation.

Spirit Day!

On Friday, we celebrated our first Spirit Day of this school year.  The 5th grade students performed and everyone showed their school spirit by wearing red.

Writer's Workshop

This week the students learned the importance of sharing their writing with their peers.  The students gathered in small groups to read a completed story.  The other students offered compliments and suggestions to make their writing better.
