National Dental Health Month
This is the 60th year that the American Dental Association has sponsored National Children's Dental Health Month to raise awareness about the importance of dental health. Developing good habits at an early age and scheduling regular dental visits helps children get a good start on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums. This past Friday we were fortunate enough to have Mikayla's mom come visit the first grade classrooms to talk to us about the importance of oral health. She also provided toothbrushes, toothpaste and floss for all of the students. For more information and kids activity pages visit the American Dental Association.

An Invitation To Our Parents
We were so excited to have Hailey's mom visit our classroom on Friday. She taught us about the different parts of a violin and how to tune a violin. Then she played several songs for us! We sang along as she played our school song and "This Land is Your Land". She also played many of our Disney favorites! It was a very special treat to have her visit.
We would like to open our classroom door to any parents that would like to share a special talent they may have. Maybe you would like to come in and talk to us about your occupation or possibly read a favorite story from your childhood. Nicole's mother has stopped by before and read a poem to us from our reading book that was written in Spanish. We compared it to the English version and learned many new Spanish words. This Friday, Mikayla's mother will be presenting a lesson to all of the first grade classes on dental health. She works as a hygienist and has provided this information to our students in the past. Let us know if you are interested in visiting and we will work to arrange a time that is convenient for you.

Pizza!
We finally finished our first piece of functional writing on Thursday. On Friday we got to follow the directions for making English Muffin Pepperoni Pizzas. We learned the importance of including all necessary steps in our directions and also how detail words make it easier to follow. Our pizzas were delicious! On Monday we will begin a new piece of functional writing...be thinking this weekend of what you are an "expert" at doing or making!

100th Day of School!
Today was a busy day. Mondays are always busy, and then today was also Groundhog's Day and the 100th day of school. We read a poem titled, 100 Is A Lot and we made a paper chain 100 links long. We also estimated how long before 100 seconds passed and jogged for 100 seconds. Zero the Hero brought us special "100" snacks made from Little Debbie cakes and mini donuts. We had copies of $100 bills and wrote about what we would do if we had that much money. Only 80 more days left in the school year!

Reading Celebration in the Park
Our school Media Specialist, Mrs. Messer, has announced that the last day to turn in reading logs will be April 13th. To receive a certificate and be invited to the Celebration in the Park, students must have read 25 books by this date. The Celebration will be held on May 30th. Students will also receive a special bronze award for having read 50 books, a silver award for 125 books, and a gold award for having read 250 books. All first grade teacher require nightly reading for homework, so all students should easily reach these reading goals. Our class alone had read and logged over 2500 books! Keep reading!
